Rag Mill Wood is a nature lovers dream. A broadleaf woodland with the attractive By Brook forming part of its boundary. The woodland for sale is approached from a gated track and is a truly enchanting place where the tree-lined babbling brook winds along the south side.  There are several sunny open areas within the wood.

About 20  metres into the wood, from the 7 bar metal gate, look out for the secret passage through the blackthorn bushes which opens up to a spectacular picture where the brook tumbles over the old wier; a more beautiful location would be hard to find.

The original mill  was used for rag processing in the 1890's,  much of the machinery including the mill wheel is still in situ. The rag mill formed part of string of mills between Long Dean and Slaughterford which date back to the 16th century.

The wood has a wealth of natural riches with ash, willow and sycamore providing shelter to badgers and deer. Birds making use of the brook include heron, kingfisher, wagtails and the dipper (the only British bird to walk under water).  In the water are native brown trout feeding on the mayflies, lots of other fish and also the native crayfish. Water voles and otters have been seen here in the past.

The By Brook is one of the best rivers in the Bristol Avon catchment, the water is classified as 1A.  The local soils are clay over limestone.

The path along the northern boundary is part of one of the Macmillan Ways, the area is in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The fishing rights are with the local angling club who have access to the river bank.
