Description:  Ransoms Wood is an ancient semi-natural wood on a southwest-facing slope on the side of the delightful Avon Valley.

Many of the old estate trees still remain including a magnificent oak overlooking the entrance. Apart from the veteran trees, ash and sycamore regeneration of about thirty years of age makes up much of the woodland, together with beech and cherry. Elm would have once been common in this wood but is now largely confined to the understorey together with field maple, hazel, holly and hawthorn.

The ground is uneven with a matrix of secluded level areas suitable for pcnics and camping, rocky outcrops, small valleys and gulleys; every square yard being a delight to explore.

The varied rock formations of Bath stone (Jurassic Oolitic limestone) make for a very interesting landscape.

This variable terrain is likely to have led to the diverse ground flora (at least 102 species have been recorded) which includes the luxuriant hart's tongue fern, dog's mercury, the stinking iris, bluebells and as the name suggests, ransoms. The wild garlic or ransoms covers most of the woodland floor, elsewhere bluebells predominate.

The elusive Bath asparagus has even been spotted. Roe deer have been seen and the dormouse is believed to inhabit the area, along with many species of bat including the rare Bechstein's bat. Seventeen different species of bird have been recorded including buzzard, chiffchaff, treecreeper and goldcrest. If you want your own area woodland to study nature close up then this is the place. Sporting rights are included.

The land is covered by a development clause put in place by a previous owner. This means that if the new owner gets planning permission for a change of use before 2026 then half of the increase in value of the land that results is payable to that previous owner. Woodland management and enjoyment is not affected by this clause.

Access and Parking:  there are two access, one is directly off the quiet Warleigh/Conkwell road behind a gated entrance,  the other access off the A363 on the upper side of the wood. This access leads to the parking area shown with the blue P.
