Peacock Wood, flanked by idyllic farmland, is a beautiful, suprisingly quiet and secluded woodland. When viewing the wood walk in from the green field-gate along the central track, through the 'elder grove' as far as the rhododendrons where the opening is ideal for parking and camping. The track to this point has been used by vehicles in the past and could be cleared back again.
After passing through the 'rhodos' follow the path which turns left and winds along the southern boundary down to the far end of the woodland.
There is oak and other broadleaves along the roadside; the woodland is enclosed by broadleaves including oak, birch, sycamore and ash along the other three boundaries. Oak, birch and sycamore are scattered thoughout the wood. Wildlife abounds largely because of the edge effect of the long habitat boundary, with small mammals on the woodland floor and birds in the canopy.
Within the broadleaved fringe there is native Scots pine at the front, a small area of Norway spruce beyond with the tall elegant well-spaced larch running down to the far end.
Although not on the ancient woodland inventory the wood is clearly old with indicator species including bluebells and wood sorrel found in abundance. The roadside bramble soon gives way to low-growing bracken while at the far end there are open glades, blue with bluebells in spring.
The woodland shape being long is ideal for those who wish to feel completly secluded (it's nearly ½ mile from the road to the end) and away from all the hustle and bustle of modern day life. Set on level ground in the Vale of York near to the pretty town of Easingwold and within easy reach of York this beautiful woodland is well worth a visit.
Sporting rights are included, they are not let. Mains water is very nearby.
Boundaries: along the north the overgrown track known as Moor Lane (not a pubic right of way) is not included, the boundary being set back from this: the other boundaries are clear.
