Description   An easy woodland to look after, the site is level and the ground sandy and free-draining. At any time of year the woodland can be enjoyed, young trees planted, older ones harvested, naturally occuring seedlings encouraged for the next generation of timber supply. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) one of our three native conifers, forms the backbone of this woodland. A good timber tree with a rust-red bark and being slow growing the timber is strong and easily worked. Planted almost 50 years ago, these Scots pines have grown straight and even, are now well-thinned and will increase steadily in diameter.

By these are the faster growing Corsican pine (Pinus nigra maritima aka laricio) introduced into this country in the mid 18th Century from southern Italy as a timber tree and it can be distinguished by their longer needles and grey bark.

Oak with some sweet chestnut spread throughout thrive here and are at an intermediate stage in thir life cycle. Halo thinning  will give them much needed space to expand in the canopy.

Nearby, an indication of local populations from early history can be seen from the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, more recent history is linked with Culford Hall and Park, at one time Mills Wood was integral with the park and now has a Historic Park designation. This does not prevent normal woodland management or allow public access this land. To the north extends the Brecklands where after the Great War planting started to form the Forestry Commission's now extensive Thetford Forest.

Boundaries   Are shown by blue markings on trees and posts and are, along the trackside, 3 metres from the track centre, the verge along the roadside and the line of posts marked blue

Sporting Rights   Are in hand and included.

Access   Is off the public highway along the grassy forest track with a full right of way, the shared maintenance is according to the use made.

Covenant    The purchasers of this woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands. Click here for details.
