Set in the Lake District National Park the woodland has a wild and private feel where nature and breathtaking views can be enjoyed; Bassenthwaite Lake stretches away to the south and the impressive Lakeland Fells, including Skidaw and Binsey are visible from the east and west of the woodland. The wood has a mixed character, the interior is predominantly spruce, other areas are sycamore and a light and airy birch grove at the northern end containing mature/semi-mature hardwoods including oak, ash, hawthorn, rowan, alder and hazel.
The boundary of the woodland contains many mature hardwood specimens such as hawthorn, oak and ash and many are mature coppice. There is an interesting rock formation close to where the main ride terminates and one of the two main seasonal streams feed a small area of wet woodland and with a little digging there is the potential for a wildlife pond. Within the herb layer are pignuts, bugle, rasberries, primroses, lesser celandine, foxgloves, ferns, abundent wood sorrel and in spring the floor transforms into a sea of bluebells. Late summer and into autumn brings a good selection of edible and non edible fungi including ceps and chanterelle. The wildlife in and around the woodland is abundant and on the woodland boundary are 2 active badger sets and red squirrels have been frequently observed feeding in the canopy layer. Roe deer and goshawks visit the woodland and buzzards can often be heard overhead. A pair of greate spotted woodpeckers and nuthatchs have also chosen to nest at Allerdale and if your lucky you will get a fleeting glance of the osprey that fish in Bassenthwaite Lake.
Allerdale Wood is accessed from the public highway via a solid track. Within the boundary is an internal ride with plenty of clear space under the tree canopy for access. A short walk from where the ride terminates is a small area of woodland that has been cleared to make room for a fire circle and campsite. Apart from family camping and woodcraft the woodland could be used as a wood resource for home heating and for nature conservation. Other activities that one could participate in from this exceptional location would include fishing or canoeing at Bassenthwaite lakes or the nearby Derwent Water, shopping in Keswick or walking the surrounding fells.
