Description

Located in attractive rural landscape close to the pleasant village of Brancepeth, with its castle and picturesque houses, the wood is only a few miles from Durham. From the main gate a grass track leads down to the wood where a quiet seclusion prevails; you will feel as if you are miles from anywhere.

Growing on a warm south facing slope there are plenty of clearings, including the main one which is ideal for private camping, that maximise the warmth of the sun while being sheltered from the wind. Along the southern boundary there are extensive views across the shallow valley, holding the Stockley Brook, of fields, farms and woodland.

The spruce was planted in 1999. Natural regeneration of birch from the same time has resulted in a fine mixture of conifer and native broadleaved trees, the latter changing with the seasons and the former providing winter cover.  The south and west boundaries are framed by lines of mature beech.

Ferns, heather, bilberry and wood sorrel compete for light and warmth in the more open areas of  the woodland floor.

The access is along the private right of way shown green on the plans, this is for all purposes and at all times. There is a covenant which is designed for the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and the neighbouring woods.

There are no special desigations apart from being shown on the Forestry Commission's National Inventory of Woodland and Trees.

Boundaries are:

Along the north and east; the track edge.  Along the west and south it's the stone wall.
