An attractive broadleaved woodland tucked away at the end of a long track and enclosed by green fields.   The old maps show a long-gone tramway passing through the wood, this took clay and coal from a small colliery to the nearby steel works. Features from this era can be seen clearly and form the ground structure on which the trees are growing. There are some veteran  ash and oak trees amongst other species such as birch and sycamore;  there's plenty of timber here to keep a household in firewood.

There is a TPO (tree preservation order) covering the wood but this doesn't hinder normal woodland management operations.

The pretty village of Dale Abbey has the pub, where you will get a warm welcome, a school and church.

Access: A farm track starting to one side of the Carpenters Arms provides access. There is a private right of way along this track. Most is all-weather but the last section is across a grass field and suitable for dry weather use only.

Viewing: We suggest you park in the Carpenters Arms car park and walk to the wood. Take the track beside the pub, continue straight ahead past the first right turn, continue and follow the bend to the right, pass through the metal gate (might be wet here) cross the field, bear right continuing until the track turns left.  At this point there is a gate ahead, somewhat overgrown by holly to the left and field maple to the right. Either climb this gate or find a way round the side, on return the gate is difficult to climb as it slopes backwards. Go straight across the field, at the field edge turn left along the boundary until reaching the wood on the right. The entrance is here with a strand of wire between the gate posts.

Click here for a link to the Carpenters Arms, well worth a visit, their opening times are on their website.

Cattle graze these fields so you may prefer not to take dogs when viewing.
