This most quiet, attractive and very private wood is set in a semi-natural ancient woodland area known as Combwell Woods. It has many interesting features and is surrounded by other privately owned woodlands and fields. The wood is well covered in very varied coppice, including hazel, birch, chestnut and ash. In the south is a small plantation of Scots pine and along the track edge are many fine oaks. Primroses, bluebells and violets are to be found amongst the coppice as well as on the adjoining tracks. A seasonal stream through one of the ‘ghylls’ (small ravine), forms the boundary along the west side. The banks of the ghyll are quite steep in places, giving it a protected climate where unusual liverworts and mosses (bryophytes) flourish. There is also a small tributary that goes across the wood.

An ancient wood bank, with views from the wood over a meadow, marks the northern edge of Fangorn Wood. This proximity to the meadow helps encourage wildlife, such as birds and butterflies, into the wood.

There are no public rights of way through the wood.  Like the adjoining woodlands Fangorn Wood is within the Combwell Wood SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). It is also very close to Bedgebury Pinetum, which is well worth a visit.
