One thing the owners of Spry Wood will never be short of is firewood. With so many ready-felled trees, even those for whom wood is their main fuel source will have no need to fell further trees for several years at least.

Having been managed for fuel wood by the previous owners, Spry Wood is already thinned in some areas. This, together with clearings linked by a network of tracks and a high canopy, give the woodland a light, airy and open feel whilst still having more enclosed areas for privacy and shelter. The woodland sits on a gentle west-facing slope, giving views out across the River Thrushel valley and surrounding farmland.

The dominant tree species are sweet chestnut, oak, ash and sycamore. There is evidence of coppicing activity, although this was quite a while ago. But these old coppice areas could be brought back in time. The under-story is mainly holly, with a nice stand of hazel near the south-west corner of the woodland. This combination of sweet chestnut and hazel, together with ash, could be of particular interest to the green woodworking enthusiast.

Roe deer, foxes, badgers and rabbits have all been seen crossing the woodland and songbirds are regularly flitting around in the canopy or turning over the leaf-litter at ground level.

Boundaries:   Are on two sides the edge of the tracks; there is a line orange topped posts to the west; at the south the eastern part is the centre of the stream and the western bit is a shallow bank just back from the stream.

Access: Is off the public highway, through the metal gate, then it curves right to the entrance to Spry Wood.

Viewing: You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself, but please ensure that you have a copy of these sales details with you - many of our woodlands do not have mobile phone reception or internet access so we recommend either printing the details or downloading them to your phone/tablet/laptop.
