Drakes Wood is a beautiful ancient semi-natural woodland, bordered by expansive open fields to the south. The site is dominated by mature oak and ash, alongside occasional beech and Scots pine. At lower levels, hazel, hawthorn and field maple are well established, while bluebells are abundant throughout the woodland in spring.

The wood forms part of the wider Odd Quarter Wood and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), reflecting its national importance. The surrounding area supports a rich variety of wildlife, including hare, muntjac, and roe deer.

The terrain is generally flat, making the woodland easy to explore. A wide ride runs from the main access track into the heart of the site, though it is currently somewhat overgrown with low bramble. With minimal effort, this could be cleared to restore vehicle access into the centre of the wood.

At the end of the ride, there is a spacious clearing that would lend itself well to a central camp or activity base. From here, a network of woodland paths winds through the site, linking a number of grassy glades. Some selective cutting back would help to reopen and better define these routes.

Drakes Wood is conveniently located between Huntingdon and Peterborough, with straightforward access to the A1. The nearby village of Sawtry is just a few minutes away, and Monks Wood Nature Reserve once connected to Odd Quarter Wood, is within easy walking distance.

Ward is Sawtry and the County Council is Cambridgeshire

Boundaries: The boundaries are open on all sides and marked with red paint on posts and trees. E and S follow the main access tracks and a drainage ditch S. N and W border neighboring woodland.

Access: There is good vehicle access via a shared track and locked gate. Parking is possible within the woodland itself.
