Titly Wood is named after the local landowner that owned Blunsdon House around 1890 and whose family are buried in the nearby village church yard. The delights of Titly Wood are best described by English nature writer Richard Jefferies who lived in Swindon in the second half of the nineteenth century and would quite possibly have passed through Titly wood during his numerous solitary wanderings. He wrote:

"Trees may be said to change their garments thrice in the season. In the spring the woods at Okebourne were of the tenderest green, which, as the summer drew on, lost its delicacy of hue. Then came the second or ‘midsummer shoot,’ brightening them with fresh leaves and fresh green. The second shoot of the oak is reddish: there was one oak in the Chace which after midsummer thus became ruddy from the highest to the lowest branch; others did not show the change nearly so much. Lastly came the brown and yellow autumn tints."

The changing colours of mature oak are very much in evidence at Titly Wood. Sections of original uniform planting can be made out amongst the later self-seeded varieties, dating back from the historic origins of this woodland as the sporting recreation grounds of the large estate owners of the time. Titly Wood is tucked away at the end of a lengthy, but well-maintained, woodland track and set amidst fertile pasture and other private woodland. The habitat here is seldom disturbed and the abundant native wildlife thrives as a result. It is possible to become immersed in the
sounds of the woods: the call of the owl; the bark of the dog fox or the just the rare pleasure of total silence.

In spite of its peaceful location, Titly Wood is easy to reach and well connected to the road network, lying just north of the A419 main route between junction 15 of the M4 at Swindon and Cirencester/Cheltenham.

Access  The woodland can be accessed by car and is located at the end of a long bridleway and then a woodland track that passes through other areas of attractive woodland.  Please note that future owners will have a key for the removable bollard in order to drive along this bridleway into the woods.
