Pelham wood is part of Butlers Wood situated on the Essex/Suffolk border. It is an example of an ancient semi-natural woodland that has survived agricultural intensification. The main species is oak with several magnificent examples that are a few hundred years old. Other species include, ash, birch, field maple and small-leaved lime which is particular to this area and there is a hazel understory, ideal for coppicing and using for greenwood crafts.

There is an abundance of wildlife, including deer, rabbits and owls and the current owners have worked hard at maintaining biodiversity by regular cutting of the rides and glades. This has increased the number of species of wildflowers found. A particular feature of the wood is the carpet of bluebells that covers at least half of the woodland floor in April/May. There is also a seasonal pond which provides additional habitat and could be renovated to hold water year round.

By the entrance there is a covered log store as well as a open-sided shelter perfect for storage or working in if it rains.

As expected such precious woods are covered by tree preservation orders (TPO) but this does not hinder normal forestry operations when covered by approved management plans.

Access  is along a right of way through a locked gate off the public highway and along a woodland track. Maintenance is according to use made.

Boundaries   on two sides it's the bank next to the drain bordering the field (south and west), to the north there are free-standing posts with orange marks, and to the east it's the far side of the internal wood track.
