A wood with a very well balanced mix of broadleaved trees and pines in a quiet yet easily accessible location, just south of York.
On arriving at the ride stop entrance on the northern boundary of Deighton Wood, the visitor will see that it’s possible to park a vehicle on a hard standing and from here a path leads off through the trees. At first, the vegetation seems quite dense with lots of coppiced hazel and young sycamore growing beneath the more mature trees, but after approximately 20m, the canopy provides more cover and the wood is a little more open at ground level, meaning that it’s very easy to get about on foot. The ground is conveniently level with a slight fall away to the south.
The foot route leads to a space under tall sycamores, this area would make a good camp ground or place for a fire with family and friends. In the spring, this area and large parts of the wood are awash with vibrant bluebells, signifying that Britain’s summer is on the way. At the same time, the woodland birdsong is almost unending, but the birds stay present all year round; buzzards, blackbirds, robins and long-tailed tits are never very far away.
Small birds such as tits, as well as resident tawny owls, enjoy the canopies of the Scots pine trees that are dotted throughout the western part of the wood. It’s a warming sight to look north through the wood and see the russet-hued trunks, almost glowing in afternoon sunlight.
Sunlight is especially abundant in the southern part of the wood as it is the woodland edge, with fields beyond. There are several old and characterful oak trees along this boundary.
The eastern section of the woodland is between a path and the Selby to York cycle route; this was once a railway line. Woodland alongside railways were often cut back as a fire break and this practice has resulted in a stand of densely planted, multi stemmed ash, elm, sycamore and aspen trees, absolutely perfect for firewood, making Deighton Wood an ideal source of hardwood logs.
The wood is named after the nearby village of Deighton, also a civil parish. The name is apparently derived from the old English for settlement surrounded by a ‘ditch’, or fortified hamlet. The parish also contains most of the village of Crockey Hill.
