A mixed woodland alongside a stream, part of a much larger forest and full of wildlife.
Surrounded on all sides by woodland, Garton Wood is located on a gentle slope and has a stream forming the northern boundary.
Made up of planted areas of two different ages, there is a diverse mix of trees. The younger area towards the top of the woodland has been growing for around 20 years, planted with beech, hazel, sweet chestnut and some oak. These trees are now very well established and growing well and the canopy is now closing in. The more mature area, of around 25-30 years, has similar species but also alder and pine, along with numerous self-seeded trees including birch, willow and sycamore. Like the more recent planting, these trees are doing very well and are adding substantial timber volume.
A grassy ride runs along the lower edge of the woodland and provides good access as well as a good vista for viewing passing wildlife and the stream. Roe and muntjac deer also gravitate towards the stream for drinking water and their tracks can be found in the soft ground of its banks and criss-crossing through the wood.
Many small paths provide easy access on foot around the wood and, near the lower northern end, a bench is situated in a clearing.
The younger of the planted areas is an excellent habitat for woodcock, who remain absolutely still and camouflaged as you approach, then burst from the undergrowth at the last minute.
Garton Wood presents excellent opportunities for the prospective owner who would like to manage and shape the wood, perhaps to encourage coppice growth and plant new species or carry out conservation projects.
The wood takes its name from Frederick Gibson Garton, a grocer from Nottingham who invented and developed HP Sauce. Many would say it’s the only acceptable accompaniment to a sausage sandwich (other sauces are available).
