An attractive woodland offering privacy, productivity and two distinct areas of character: mature planted conifers and well established, self seeded, mixed deciduous tree species. Glebeland Wood has a great deal to offer the potential woodland purchaser.

Leading to the ride-stop entrance at the south western corner of the wood is a surfaced, strong, stoned forest track: it is easy to drive a vehicle right onto the hard-surfaced timber stacking area or turning point. In this area the wood is dominated by large Scots pines; the reddish hues of the rough barked trunks is bold and draws the eye upwards to the canopy. Intermingled is the softer foliage of straight growing larch trees. Beneath the pines it feels really quite private as there is a great deal of coppiced hazel growing, full of catkins in Spring. Here and there the odd holly, birch and thorn trees grow with a strong understory of blackberry bushes and fragrant honeysuckle plants that scramble for the sunlight.

A cleared path leads off to the right from the ride-stop, weaving between the pines, ferns and blackberry. A startled woodcock may be set off and it’s likely that a friendly robin will keep you company, hoping that a few insects will be disturbed as you walk. The path weaves through a ‘portal’ of hazel shoots and emerges on slightly higher ground with a clearing next to an old stump – well picked over by woodpeckers. From here the visitor gets a good perspective on the other character areas of the wood. North from here, a well trodden deer track leads into a section of the wood which is carpeted with bracken; great cover for deer to bed down in. Bluebells and wild garlic grow in this northern part too.

To the east there are fewer pines and at the eastern boundary of Glebeland Wood there is an excellent cycletrack. This is the Selby to York spur of the Trans-Pennine Trail cycle network. The route follows a disused railway line and this explains the contrasting character of the eastern compartment of the wood. Once, when steam trains ran, this was kept clear as a fire-break. The trees that have colonised this area are now around thirty to forty years old, a mix of elm, sycamore, cherry, birch, ash and other deciduous trees. These self-set trees are growing quite densely, many are multi-stemmed and would be an excellent source of firewood or craft logs.
