Hob Wood is a ‘planted ancient woodland site’ (paws) with much to interest the family Woodland owner. Tall slender pines cover two thirds of the area; they were planted about 40 years ago and have grown in to healthy mature trees. Dappled sunlight filters through the softwood canopy to the forest floor. These conditions are ideal to enable the ancient broad-leaf seed stock to grow - including oak, ash and beech.
Oak trees are plentiful in Hob Wood and, given the opportunity, would re-colonise and become the dominant species. Dotted amongst the pine, the oaks are reaching up through the canopy. Many acorns find their way down to the woodland floor and have germinated, aided in no small part by the squirrel population who are master tree planters.
Coppiced hazel, together with rowan and holly, forms the shrub layer and on the woodland floor in spring time, and swathes of bluebells are punctuated by sculptural ferns. Occasionally small elms can also be found, a tree of great use to the coppicer. Honeysuckle climbs up the trunks of both taller trees and coppice stools offering a tangled hide-away for birds to nest in.
Hob Wood is set on a gentle slope. Higher up, closer to the southern edge of the woodland, a wide band of hardwoods, including large old oaks and sycamores, are interspersed with coppiced trees, and the light, white coloured trunks of birches and some large hollies. There is also some sweet chestnut and cherry to further add to the variety. This rich patch of woodland with all its fruiting trees is a haven for birdlife; during spring and early summer, the whole area is alive with bird song.
Walton Hall, less than a mile to the north of the wood, is a Grade II listed, late 18th-century country house, now used as a farmhouse. It is situated where an earlier manor house, also known as Walton Hall was the seat of the Foljambe family in the 16th and 17th centuries. Several members of the family served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire.
Boundaries: The boundary is open on all sides and marked with mauve paint. The site borders neighbouring woodland N, E and W. The southern boundary looks out to a park.
Access: Access to Hob Wood is via a solid shared woodland track which runs from Matlock Road to the north, direct to the ridestop entrance of Hob Wood. Beyond here is a level area suitable for stacking timber or loading a vehicle.
Covenant: There is a covenant on the wood designed to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands, click HERE to read and download.
Viewing: Please take care when viewing as the great outdoors can contain unexpected hazards and woodlands are no exception.
