A beautiful native woodland with a useful mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, rich in wildlife.
Plumtree Wood has large and mature pine, ash and oak trees with an understory of small mixed, deciduous trees beneath. It is situated on a gentle, south-east facing slope with a sunny aspect; an excellent wood for invertebrates and birds. While Plumtree Wood is quite compact, it will provide much to the woodland owner wishing to supplement that most sustainable of domestic fuels, firewood.
The standard trees are straight grown, with some covered in growing ivy, giving good cover and nest sites to the birdlife within the wood. Down below, the understory and ground flora has much of interest including holly, occasional yew, wild rose, ferns and patches of blackberry, providing further year-round wildlife habitat. The berry bearing trees are particularly important to the foragers when stocking up for Winter and augmenting the meagre food supplies when stocks are low.
The wood can be accessed directly from good tracks leading from Laming Gap Lane. The entrance has a ridestop identified with a sign and red markings and beyond this is a cleared utility area, ideal for stacking timber and other woodland tasks. The floor of Plumtree wood is reasonabley clear and following one of the numerous trails, a woodland bench will be found in one of the natural glades; a great spot to rest a while and observe the resident wildlife.
Roe deer and muntjac pass through, leaving clues of their presence in slot marks and bed areas. Other animals to be spotted include squirrels, hare and birds such as wrens, tits and woodpeckers. Anyone spending time in the wood is likely to hear owls calling and buzzards mewing overhead.
The biodiversity of the woodland is supported by the openness of the track along its north western edge and to a lesser extent the ride to the south east. This grassy habitat encourages invertebrates to seek out feeding opportunities and visitors such as brimstone, peacock, speckled wood and orange tip butterflies (amongst others) flutter along this ride. ‘Woodland edge’ and clearings are a valuable habitat for many invertebrates such as solitary woodland bumble bees and dragonflies, while bee-flies, may also feed on nectar before perhaps laying their eggs in bumble bee nests
A feature of interest within the locality is the Grantham Canal (just a mile away) opened in 1797 and closed to boating in 1929: nature has reclaimed it with much of the canal now designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The towpath has been rebuilt as a lovely walking and cycling route and the Grantham Canal Society is working on ways to restore the canal for boats, while preserving it as a space for nature. A stretch of canal from Woolsthorpe to the A1 near Grantham is now once again navigable and the Society runs boat trips there.
