A delightful secluded woodland, with a useful tool store, in an area of great natural beauty, overlooking heather moors.
Sailhill Wood is in an elevated position about 250 metres above sea level where the air is clean and fresh. The actual Sail Hill to the east of the wood is only a little higher and from both, there are commanding views over the surrounding hills, moors and farmland.
Travelling along the leafy lanes between hedgerows and then along the woodland track the visitor will experience a feeling of the 'wild' and be transported to a beautiful and tranquil place, which is ideal for getting away from the rigours of everyday life.
A track leads to the wood giving vehicle access to a grassy clearing which would be suitable for both parking and occasional camping, a further clearing can also be reached on foot via a short path from the parking area. Once within the wood, foot access is good amongst the bracken growing in the open areas during the summer months. In one clearing a useful tool store / shed is located, with space to make a cup of tea and sit in the shelter, out of any inclement weather.
The trees are mostly Scots pine, one of our three native evergreens, and like other conifers gives winter colour and that wonderful 'pine' scent on warm summer days. With the pine are birch and a scattering of other native broadleaves including rowan, sycamore and occasional oak. On the woodland floor are wood sorrel with ferns and bracken. A superb wood for wildlife having the advantages of being right next to the designated wildlife area - see the links below - with the clear evocative call of the oystercatcher often heard.
The wood is growing on the crest of a small hill, and it has a plateau with gentle slopes dropping away to the north and south. The south face slopes gently down to the stone wall boundary, beyond which the land falls steeply to a small stream known as the Swinney Beck. The access is up the north side, up from the small seasonal stream.
Access to Sailhill Wood is from Starkbank Road over the woodland track shown green on the plan with a full right of access.
Sporting rights: come with the woodland and are included in the sale.
Location and Surrounding Area: Sailhill Wood is part of Ellingstring Plantation just outside the small village of Ellingstring in Lower Wensleydale, one of the Yorkshire Dales, between Masham and Leyburn.
Click here for a description of the Nidderdale AONB (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) special landscape designation.
The moors to the west and north are especially interesting being designated as a SSSI and a SPA (Special Protection Area, an international bird designation). Sheep graze on pasture to the south and east.
Being high on the edge of the moors it's wild in winter, beautiful in summer while the amazing views across the dale to the hills of the North York Moors can be enjoyed year-round.
