Swale Ings Wood is a private and tranquil pine wood, part of a larger forest with great access.

The wood is a planted ancient woodland site (PAWS), and so has a rich diversity of species. Although the predominant tree cover is a mix of tall Scots  and Corsican pine, around the southern and eastern edges, interfacing with tracks, there is a lot more of the original semi natural woodland evident with oak, birch, coppiced hazel, hawthorn and goat willow as well as a few sycamores. Honeysuckle, ferns, wood sorrel and an abundance of bluebells are all present at ground level.

A few useful woodland facilities are included, focused around a base-camp enclave, ideal for the welfare of a woodland worker, or occasional camper. They include a fire pit area with hearth, a covered washing up station, an enclosed timber shed / store with overhanging roof helping to keep firewood dry as well as a couple of additional tarps as work areas or to pitch a tent beneath. A short distance away is a compost toilet.

There are several drains that cross the wood, one has a ‘leaky dam’ installed so that some water is retained and adjacent to this is a small wildlife pond with a bench beside, holding water in the wetter seasons.

Access

A good stone track leads all the way to the tide stop entrance towards the south western corner of the wood. Paths around the wood are well defined and clear, with timber bridges where routes cross ditches.

Activities

The wood is perfect for those who want to carry out woodcrafts and manage the wood for ecology, as well as for their own health and wellbeing. It would also be great for a nature-loving family interested in an occasional camper over

Wildlife

Here and there, holly provides some cover for birds and good browsing for the roe deer who frequent the area.  Their beds, or scrapes, can often be found in the wood. Visitors may observe and hear buzzards overhead, or possibly even the hoot of a tawny owl.

Activities

Swale Ings Wood would give an active woodland owner a great opportunity to enjoy spending time peacefully in the wood.  A more active owner may like to gradually shape and manage it back to its origins as broadleaf standard and coppiced woodland whilst providing a useful supply of firewood logs and timber for woodworking projects.

Local & History

Located within the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, in the Vale of York, between the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds, the wood is situated less than a mile from the River Swale. Several important archaeological and prehistoric sites lie within a short distance, including the The Devil's Arrows and Aldborough Roman Town just outside Boroughbridge and the famous battle fields of Marston Moor and Stamford Bridge.
