Description    Across the stream, which flows through Briar Wood, there are two breached dams and retaining banks, which historically certainly formed ponds within the wood. Although some substantial trees now grow in these old pond areas, perhaps an enthusiastic owner may well be able to re-create them. This type of structure is fairly common in Kent and Sussex and were used to impound water often to drive hammer mills, the multiple dams gave a continuity of water supply with the mills often being well downstream. Wild orchids adorn the banks of these ponds. Most of the wood is classified as PAWS (a plantation on ancient woodland site).

Principally a pine woodland on an ancient woodland site with many fine towering aspen trees as well as hornbeam, hawthorn, elder and willow and a springtime carpet of wildflowers.

The diversity of wildlife is illustrated by The Kent Wildlife Trust surveys (1976-87) for the wood known as March and Benacre Woods, of which Briar Wood forms a part, recording up to 125 species of flora and up to 17 species of butterfly. Access  Is through the roadside gate as shown on the plan, then along the wide woodland ride which forms the western boundary. There is a full right of way along this track with maintenance according to the use made. Sporting rights are included.
