In some of Longbow Wood, magnificent Corsican pine provide lofty shade under a high canopy. Much of the wood, however, has young oaks, chestnut, birch and maple. Under these there is varied groundcover of fern, bracken and wildflowers, which all provide cover and food for wildlife. The birch and maple could be thinned, and the chestnut coppiced, little by little, and seasoned to provide firewood to take home.  You may hear, and even see, in Longbow Wood some of the many birds that are present in the neighbouring RSPB Broadwater Nature Reserve, on the opposite side of the road. Amongst others they have goldcrest, siskin, lesser redpoll, green woodpecker, nightjar and marsh tit.  The wood is part of Broadwater Forest County Wildlife Site, click here for details.  This describes the wildlife of the area.

The south side of the wood has been fenced along the roadside, and there is access for an owner by the locked roadside entrance gate.
Broadwater Forest, of which Longbow Wood is part, is officially recognised by the Forestry Commission as PAWS (Planting on an Ancient Woodland Site). Up to the mid 1800’s Broadwater Forest, and the adjoining Warren were known as Waterdown Forest, which was once one of the four medieval hunting Forests of the High Weald Forest Ridge. Nearby is a National Monument known as ‘High Rocks’ where the large sandstone outcrops were once a prehistoric Iron Age fortified encampment, and where the local settlers would gather their families and livestock when raided by other marauding tribesmen.

Access   Is off Broadwater Forest Lane along a solid forest track where there is a full right of way.

Boundaries  Are the roadside, the trackside, alongside the path at the north and a line of freestanding posts at the southwest.

Covenant  There is a covenant on the wood designed to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands, click HERE to read and download.
