Stonegate Wood has most features to make it the ideal conservationists and family woodland. Good quality mature oak, over hazel coppice, seasonal streams, lots of bluebells, flat and easy internal access and private. A lane-side gate gives vehicle access into a parking area, just nearby is a glade suitable for campfires and camping where there is plenty of firewood
There are two designations: i) the wood is covered by a tree preservation order as are most of the woods in the environs, they are all ancient woods and ii) it is part of the Bilsington Woods and Pasture Local Wildlife Site. Both designations recognise the high conservation value of these woods. Normal forestry management is not affected where a Forestry Commission agreed management plan is in place.
