Champles Wood is a stunning example of ancient and semi-natural broadleaf woodland, nestled just south of Exmoor National Park.

The woodland comprises two distinct sections. At the lower level, it borders the picturesque Iron Mill Stream, deep enough in places for a refreshing wild swim for the adventurous. Fishing rights are also included. Higher up, a hard track leads up and across the top of the site, leading to a private access point that opens into the heart of the woodland. Here, you’ll find a large, sheltered, open glade complete with a firepit and flat, grassy areas—ideal for setting up camp.

Mature oaks dominate the canopy, interspersed with beech, sycamore, and birch, while hazel forms much of the understory; you may also spot the occasional holly. With well-spaced trees, the woodland invites easy exploration. While there are a few steeper sections, the terrain is largely flat. In spring and early summer, bluebells and stitchwort surround you in season, producing a spectacular display.

Champles Wood offers complete seclusion, with the only sounds being the wealth of birdlife that surrounds you—making it an ideal retreat for those seeking peace and a connection to nature. There is also a good 4G signal in the area.

Nearby, the Stoodleigh Inn and the charming town of Bampton are just a short drive away, as is Tiverton to the south.

The ward is Clare & Shuttern, and the county council is Devon.

Boundaries: The boundary is open on all sides and borders neighbouring woodland. E and S follow the access track. N follows the Iron Mill Stream and the public footpath.

Access: There is excellent vehicle access all year round via a shared locked gate and hard track. Parking is possible within the woodland itself.
