Description  Falco Wood is set in the heart of a beautiful area of Devon near to the village of Northlew and has an amazing mixture of mature ash, oak and beech trees with a good variety of ground flora. This woodland is ideal for those who wish to encourage biodiversity and conservation or engage in small forestry projects. If you are quiet you may see one of the many roe deer that frequent the wood. It is simply glorious in the spring with an outstanding display of bluebells as seen in some of the photographs. The presence of bluebells confirms the woods status as semi-natural ancient woodland.   This fine woodland has formed an integral part of the history of the area of Ashbury and part of the old estate of Ashbury Manor.

Access is through ancient stone gate posts and over a stone bridge with a build date of 1830 marked on a stone above the arch. These original features have been recently re-discovered and were part of the Ashbury Manor. You can see the craftsmanship in the stone work which must have been a showpiece entrance created by the owners of the estate.

As you follow the track you will see a Ha-Ha wall on your left hand side. Reaching the end of this wall you will see the historic St Mary's Church on the left.

The River  Falco Wood slopes down from its western boundary to the river Lew, the centre of which forms its eastern boundary. Single bank fishing rights are included. shallow with a gentle flow, although in winter it can be a bit more boisterous. There are two entrances, the first by a car parking area which is ideal for those who wish to drive to their own woodland, the second entrance is further along the track at the northern end. This is access is for the more adventurous in a 4x4 or by foot. The track here goes down through the wood and to the river bank. A better picnic spot would be hard to find!  The main entrance track leading to Falco Wood has historical interest, apparently being the original drive to the great Ashbury Manor, which sadly no longer exists. There are many local legends as to why the manor was destroyed. Another piece of local history is that in 1912 a William Dennis, born in the village in 1886, died in the Titanic disaster.

Whilst by the river close your eyes and enjoy the sound of the birdsong and the tranquil sound of the river as it gently flows over the rocks, a great place to unwind and forget modern day life.

The nearest village is Northlew , while Okehampton further on has an excellent range of shops, cafes, Inns and takeaways. If you are looking for a place to lunch or stay when at the wood, the local Highwayman Inn is an unusual treat!

There is a covenant click here to read designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.
