Nymph Wood is a stunning broadleaf woodland set high on the rolling hills of the Devon countryside. Peaceful, private and rich in wildlife, this beautiful ancient woodland is a truly special place that should not be missed.
Dominated by magnificent veteran oak, the woodland also features mature beech and hazel, with ash and holly also present. At the lower levels, great chinese rhododendrons, japanese pieris, ferns and native grasses create a rich and varied understorey. In spring, carpets of bluebells blanket the woodland floor, a classic hallmark of this ancient semi-natural woodland.
Entering through the private gated entrance, a broad oak-lined ride leads gently to the highest point of the woodland, where a large, level clearing enjoys breathtaking panoramic views across the rolling Devon hills to the west and south. This elevated area also benefits from a useful storage shed and a sheltered area, making it an ideal base for enjoying the woodland.
Although much of the woodland slopes gently down into the valley, the current owner has thoughtfully created a network of level vehicle tracks and footpaths that provide excellent access throughout the site. These well-maintained routes make woodland management and leisurely exploration equally enjoyable. A small stream flows through the northern section of the woodland before joining the River Mole at the valley floor.
Positioned at the very end of the shared woodland track, Nymph Wood offers exceptional privacy and seclusion, providing a tranquil retreat immersed in nature. The peaceful setting supports an abundance of wildlife, with deer, badgers and a wide variety of woodland birds and other native species regularly seen throughout the year.
The small village of Chittlehamholt is within walking distance via public footpaths that cross neighbouring woods and fields. The village offers a well-regarded pub and a village shop for everyday essentials. Kings Nympton railway station is just a short drive away, providing convenient transport links, while the spectacular North Devon National Landscape and dramatic coastline are both within easy reach, offering endless opportunities for further exploration.
The Ward is Chittlehampton and the County Council is Devon.
