Oak woods are always magical places, but to find one in such a beautiful setting is exceptional. The area around North Tawton is known as  Devon's forgotten heart and feels a million miles away from the tourist traps around the coast. Yet, twenty minutes south is the north edge of Dartmoor. Tawton Wood, approached through narrow lanes between the villages of North Tawton and Bondleigh, is a gently sloping, mature oak woodland with newer growth of beech, silver birch, hazel and holly under the oak canopy.

There are spectacular areas of spring wildflowers including violets, bluebells, red campion, primrose and thyme-leaved sandwort. The ground is mostly firm and dry, but there are some small wetter areas too that would be suitable for making ponds. Badgers, owls and other wildlife are well established and the birdsong is about loudest thing you will hear when you visit. The wood is surrounded by other woodland on three sides and by farmland on the other. This is rural England at its best, and Tawton Wood has the marvellous combination of seclusion and accessibility that gives you the opportunity for a real escape from the hurley-burley of the modern world. At just over eight acres, there is plenty to explore and much to see. A real gem of a wood.

  • From Exeter take the A30 West towards Okehampton and, after about 15 miles, take the slip road signed A382.
  • Continue along this road and then take the right turn to North Tawton, just after the Esso garage.
  • After a few hundred metres, take the next right, the A2134 (a new road which might not be on your satnav) , signposted to North Tawton and Winkleigh; this takes you north, back over the A30.
  • Drive for about 5 miles. Just before North Tawton go straight ahead at the crossroads over the A3072 and continue into the village, straight on at the mini-roundabout. At the centre of the village, bear slightly right, keeping the clock tower on your left, and continue straight on (slightly staggered right then left) through the narrow entrance to the lane to Bondleigh.
  • After about a mile, the lane sinks between high Devon banks and the entrance to the woods is at the bottom of the hill on the left. You will see a metal gate with a post and rail fence either side. Please park without blocking the entrance to the farmer's field or the entrance to the cottage garden. Access on foot is through the gate. Carefully climb the side rails. Follow the track keeping right.
