Turnpike Wood is a beautiful oak woodland set within the open landscapes of the Wiltshire countryside.

Wide rides and open glades create a wonderful sense of space, framed by towering oaks that line the tracks running through and around the site. These rides not only enhance the character of the wood but also provide excellent access for management.

The woodland features oak of varying ages, complemented by a diverse mix of birch, alder, hawthorn and ash. The terrain flat throughout easy to explore following the clear woodland paths, and in summer grasses and wildflowers spring up at lower levels. The rides and glades offer ideal spots for establishing camp bases for woodland activities and space to enjoy the dappled light filtering through the canopy.

For nature lovers, Turnpike Wood is a haven. Pheasants, hares and deer are frequent visitors from the surrounding countryside, drawn by the natural water sources and the shelter the woodland provides from the open fields beyond. Unusually, there were also a number of peacocks in the wood on our visit. Peaceful and private, the wood is set well away from roads, offering a rare opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the landscape.

The picturesque town of Cricklade is just a short drive away, with a range of pubs, shops and restaurants. Blunsdon and Swindon are also within easy reach, providing convenient access to the M4.

The ward is Blunsdon and Highworth and the Council is Swindon Borough.

Boundaries: The boundary is open N and W and borders neighbouring woodland. S follows the drainage ditch and the access track and bridleway beyond. W follows a shared access track. E is partially fenced and looks out to open fields. The boundaries are also marked with red paint on trees and posts.

Access: There is excellent vehicle access all year round via a hard track and locked posts at the junction of Little Rose Lane and a shared gate leading into the wood itself. Parking is possible within the woodland itself.

Covenant: There is a covenant on the wood designed to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands, click HERE to read and download.
