Brocklehirst Wood presents a rare opportunity to purchase an attractive mixed woodland featuring, a small stream and conveniently located close to Dumfries.

The entrance to the wood from the trackside entrance marker is along a short path leading directly to the heart of the wood. Towering trees rise from the woodland floor, creating the sense of a much larger woodland. The mix of conifer and broadleaf gives year-round greenery and a relatively open canopy, allowing light to penetrate through to the understorey. Scots pine and spruce are the main conifer species, with a surprisingly wide variety of native broadleafs making up the remainder. Ash, sycamore, yew, elm and birch are scattered throughout with a fringe of lime and rhododendron along the trackside boundary. Beneth the lofty giants, bramble, fern and foxglove carpet the woodland floor with a variety of mosses covering decaying stumps and boughs.

A small free-flowing stream which rises within the wood is populated along its banks with a range of flourishing water-loving plants.

The wood is largely flat and easy to traverse, with several open glades both along the burn and within the woodland itself, ideal for creating a private and secluded camp base.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
