A mature oak woodland with good access, open outlooks and a shared stream tumbling down the southern boundary.
Description: Burnie Oak Wood is an ancient semi-natural oak and birch woodland resting on a predominantly gentle slope with good drainage and red, mixed soils. The cascading burn along the southern boundary draws a variety of wildlife, with elm, sycamore and willow trees lining the narrow, steep glen along which the water flows. There is easier walking access above this glen amongst the undulating, majestic and previously coppiced oak areas, with rural views over the Stinchar valley apparent from the various openings in the wood.
Private areas, particularly when the trees are in full leaf, for occasional camping can be accessed via paths in the middle and lower areas. Outlines of old tracks and what could be old packhorse trails are also still visible and usable around the wood. Other broadleaves including ash, beech and sycamore, co-exist amongst the oaks. Red deer, red squirrels and diverse bird life flourish in the vicinity, and moist grasses, ferns, bluebells, wood anemones and brambleberries seasonally carpet the woodland floor.
A recently installed shepherd's hut is included in the sale. This is a fantastic place to camp over in comfort. The stove, beds and shelves will also be included. All personal items will be removed before completion of the sale, as will the chainsaw-carved bear in front of the hut..
Wayleaves: There is an underground telephone line, serving the cottage above Burnie Oak and Daljarrock woodlands, running through the lower part of, and up alongside the internal stone track.
Access: External access is via a hard stone private track leading off the A714 over which there is a shared legal all-purpose vehicular right of access, shown green on the maps. The track skirts around most of Burnie Oak Wood perimeter. Leading off this main track are 2 packed earth internal tracks accessing the central and lower eastern areas.
Sporting Rights: These are owned and are included with the land.
Mineral Rights: These are owned and included with the land except where reserved by statute.
Surrounding Area: Burnie Oak Wood is situated in the heart of the Daljarrock Forest in mixed woodland and rural hillside settings in the pretty River Stinchar valley. There is a great variety of wildlife in the valley, including red squirrel, red deer, roe deer, otters, badgers and reptiles, and birds from blue tits to buzzards, plover to peregrine. Many nearby walks and the tranquil unspoilt environment make the area perfect for nature and general outdoor enthusiasts. A walk up Knockdolian Hill provides panoramic land and sea views. For the more adventurous, the long-distance walking route - The Carrick Way - is close by. The huge Galloway and Carrick Forests can be explored further to the east and an early spring wildlife festival takes place throughout neighbouring Dumfries & Galloway every year. The coastal town of Girvan, and shingle beaches at Woodland and Ballantrae Bay are within 10 miles to the West. Nearby Pinwherry and Barrhill villages have local services whilst Colmonell and Dailly have forestry mills/suppliers too. Ayr, Stranraer and Newton Stewart are within 30 miles.
