Set high in a stunning location, Cam y Cwrlwm offers much potential. The main part of the wood is to the east of the main access track, but the small area of woodland to the west of the track, between the track and the fence line for the adjoining field is also part of the wood.
There are two very different areas in the main part of the wood: on the western facing slopes there are mature beech and oak, planted in 1960. Rocky outcrops add interest to this part of the wood. The conifer crop on the eastern side of the wood was clearfelled a decade ago, and there is now a combination of naturally regenerating broadleaf woodland…especially birch, rowan, and, oak… with some conifers….Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir and Scots Pine. The remaining replanting obligations of the 2016-17 Felling Licence were discharged with selected “infill” planting of 500 native broadleaf trees.
The mature beech is spectacularly clear of undergrowth, making it very easy to walk around. The younger areas have a much greater level of undergrowth: following the existing paths it is easy to walk around, but stray off the paths it’s much harder work.
The woodland benefits from a track running along the full length of its western boundary, around the northern end, and part way down the eastern side. The initial section of track as far as the northern end of the wood has a shared right of way with neighbouring woods, but just beyond the furthest point, marked with posts for a ride-stop, the track is part of Cam y Cwrlwm This track terminates at a turning circle.
A footpath runs through the middle of the wood from the turning circle back to the south-western tip of the wood (see the wood map). Another path heads north from the turning circle to a shelter used by the current owners. The structure is in good condition, but the canvas cover is in need of attention.
The woodland also offers sea views across to Borth Sands and Ynyslas beach from its western slopes.
Access: A shared track runs from the road to the south of the wood, through a gateway, up to the northern end of the wood, and then continues within the wood itself on the eastern side. This should be usable with an ordinary car at any time of the year. A short track runs up into the wood from the south-western corner.
Boundaries: Cam y Cwrlwm is in two parts, separated by the main access track. Far and away the largest part has the edge of the main access track as its western and northern boundary . The northern half of the eastern boundary is also the access track, but the far side, so the track is part of the wood. The remainder of the eastern boundary, and the straight southern boundary, are marked by stakes, and further indicated with red paint (see photo 21). These stakes are easily seen on the south-western side of the southern boundary, but harder to find where the natural regen is more prolific on the eastern boundary.
The much smaller area to the west of the main block sits between the access track and the fence line of the adjoining field.
Sporting rights: Included.
Mineral rights: reserved to a previous owner.
Public footpaths: There are no public footpaths within, or near to, Cam y Cwrlwn.
Fencing: there are no known fencing obligations.
Flora, Fauna and Fungi: several species of mushroom can be found around the wood, including bolette, milkcap, and brittlegiils. A wide variety of birdlife was seen and heard while preparing these sales particulars, including Great Spotted Woodpecker, Goldcrest, Nuthatch, Meadow Pipit, Jay, Treecreeper as well as Robin, Wren, Blackbird, Chaffinch and various Tits. A couple of Nightjars have been seen in the wood over several years. There is a badger sett within the wood, and hares have also been seen.
Covenant: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.
Photographs: were taken in September 2026
Local area: Both Aberystwyth and Machynlleth are within easy reach and both have good independent shops, cafes and restaurants and will cater for all supplies.
Just north of Mach is the fascinating Centre for Alternative Technology, so ahead of its time they were once thought of as a bit bonkers...! If only everyone had been so forward thinking.
The nature reserves of Ynys Hir and Cors Dyfi are a short drive away on the Ceredigion coast, both giving the opportunity to see a great variety of bird and wildlife including the magnificent Osprey which bred for the first time in 2011 at the Cors Dyfi nature reserve.
VIEWING: You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself. Please ensure that you have a copy of these sales details with you: we recommend either printing the details or downloading them to your phone/tablet/laptop before you go. Please take care when viewing as the great outdoors can contain unexpected hazards and woodlands are no exception.
