Coed Nant Glas is located in a secluded and tranquil valley near the town of Machynlleth, the ancient capital of Wales. Access is from the minor road to a good track through the woodland with several smaller paths providing easy access. The woodland also has a good supply of water. A small stream runs through the entire length of the woodland and the lower boundary is defined by a small river, the Nant Blaen-y-Cwm. The top end of the woodland is mainly flat providing several large areas ideal for family camping and other woodland activities. The rest of the woodland is gently sloping down the valley.
Trees: The woodland includes a well balanced mix of native broadleaved trees and some conifers. Lots of oak but also some rowan and beech, with an understorey of birch, hazel and holly in places. The woodland is quiet and peaceful and has a bright and open feel to it.
Ancient Woodland: the whole of the wood is designated as Restored Ancient Woodland.
The Cabin: for tool and equipment storage, and shelter while engaged in forestry, is equipped with a wood burning stove. There is also an old shed further into the wood.
Public footpath: runs from the road towards the gateway into the neighbouring wood, and then drops down the hill towards the bridge.
Boundaries: The boundaries of the wood were once indicated with blue markings, but most of these have faded almost completely (see photo 18). The river forms the lower boundary. The western boundary (south of the public footpath) is the road, and is a fence line north of the footpath. The majority of the eastern boundary follows the fence line of the adjoining field; the northernmost section, after the gateway into the neighbouring wood, is formed by the small stream. Between these two is a short section marked by painted posts.
Access: there is vehicle access directly off the road onto the public footpath, and also to the cabin through double gates nearby. The owners of the adjoining woodland have a right of access for their woodland along the public footpath highlighted in green on the map.
There is a flat grassy area next to the cabin, and there is also a fairly level area easily accessible on foot from the road a bit further up the hill. The easiest spots for access are just beyond telegraph pole number 9B. This area also provides pretty views over the surrounding countryside.
Sporting rights: Included
Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute
Covenant: there is a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Photographs were taken in June and July 2025.
Local area: Coed Nant Glas is just five miles south-east of Machynlleth. The 230 hectare Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Glaslyn Nature Reserve is just over five miles away. Just south of Machynlleth are the Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve, the Ynys-Hir Nature Reserve (RSPB), and the Dyfi Osprey Project.
