Didley Wood, Herefordshire

Didley Wood is part of Knockerhill Wood, a woodland designated by Herefordshire Nature Trust and Herefordshire Council as a "Special Wildlife Site": somewhere that contributes significantly to biodiversity, conservation and the wildlife network. Sites of mature ancient woodland such as this are rare in the UK and a new purchaser will want to manage in ways that protect and preserve the mature trees and wildlife.

Trees: It is graced with wonderfully mature and statuesque broadleaf trees: oak, ash, hornbeam, silver birch and sweet chestnut, and the next generation of trees are evident in a healthy understorey of oak saplings as well as holly, hazel and rowan, supplemented by some planting by the current owner. On the forest floor bluebells burst into life in the spring.

Wildlife: A fantastic range of wildlife has established itself with evidence of dormice, badger, fox, fallow deer and birdlife including kestrel, and peregrine falcon and this is mainly due to the woodland being left largely undisturbed for a period of at least 50 years in the second half of the last century and the beginning of this.

Boundaries: The boundaries of the wood are defined by the hardstanding area and track on the southern edge, by the road on the western edge, by fields on the northern edge. The eastern boundary is a straight line from the main track to the fenceline at the edge of the field.  The starting point on the track is between the green painted tree (Didley Wood) and the blue painted tree (Ridge Hill Wood) (See photo 8). There should be similarly painted trees along the boundary, but they are hard to find!

Access: the access to Didley Wood is excellent; the shared parking area is right next to the entrance and a track suitable for vehicles runs through the whole of Knockerhill Wood to a second turning area at the far end.

Didley Wood is level which makes it easy to explore, play in and undertake woodland work, all of which is made easier by a circular path that runs round inside the wood.

Sporting rights: included

Mineral rights: Included, except as excluded by statute.

Covenant: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Shelter: there is a shipping container next to the main track, for storage, which is also equipped with a wood burning stove. A little further into the wood there is an open fronted wood store and shelter.

Fencing obligations: no known obligations

Public footpaths: there are no public footpaths or public access of any kind in Knockerhill Wood.

Local area: Didley Wood is four miles south of Hereford. There is a network of public footpaths around the Roman Fort on Aconbury Hill, just under two miles away, and the food in the Pilgrim Hotel, just south of Aconbury Hill on the A49, is excellent.
