Ffawydd Fach, at the end of a long climb from the road, is a peaceful, secluded hilltop woodland. It's not a huge acreage, but the variety of terrain resulting in different areas with small level spots within them which could be developed into nature hides, or dens, or just a nice spot for a cuppa, make Ffawydd Fach seem bigger.

A sheltered enclosed pull-in area has been cut into the hillside at the north western corner of the woodland.

Boundaries:  The northern boundary is the main access track.  The southern boundary is the fence line adjoining the Carmarthen Golf Club.  The western boundary is marked by a line of stakes, and all boundaries are further indicated with blue paint.

Trees: A wide range of broadleaf to be found here, and of varying age which is a good sign in a woodland, ensuring as the woodland further matures there will be specimens to take the place of the loss of older trees in the future.

In the younger regenerating area in the western half of the wood, there are some lovely healthy saplings and young established specimens of rowan, birch, oak and hazel making up dense growth, interspersed with gorse, bracken and some bramble, with more mature oak and beech up on the southern boundary where the thicker canopy has resulted in less undergrowth.

Some well spaced stumpy beech give great character to the mid section of Ffawydd Fach, and supress excess growth in the understory, allowing for easier movement through the woodland here, towards the eastern boundary. There are some large multi stem hazel here also.

Wildlife: A plethora of birds seen and heard here - the familiar robin, wren and blackbird; also chiff chaff and wood warbler with its distinctive call as well as the unmistakable knocking of the woodpecker.  Also evident are many small burrows of woodland mammals, species unconfirmed but likely to include voles and wood mice.

Lots of wildflowers here, yellow pimpernel, herb Robert, stately foxglove and cranesbill and lots of honeysuckle winding its way.

Access: Access to the larger woodland, Cwm Tawel, is directly off the main road and the first sections of shared access track are accessible to any vehicle; however, the last part of the track up to Ffawydd Fach itself is quite steep and probably only suitable for a four wheel drive vehicle.

Public footpaths: There are no public footpaths through Ffawydd Fach itself, but a footpath does run along the outside of it's eastern boundary, through part of the neighbouring woodlands Coed Telor and Allt Foel-fawr, and down to the main entrance gate.

Covenant:  there is a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Sporting rights: Included.

Mineral rights: Included, except as excluded by statute.

Local area and history: The reservoir in the valley bottom used to provide water for Carmarthen but has been decommissioned for many years now. Throughout Cwm Tawel small brick structures can be seen, chambers for accessing the network of channels built to carry spring water to the reservoir when it was supplying Carmarthen with water, under the management of the Carmarthen Corporation Water Works in the late 19th C.

Nearby is the Dan-y-Coed Halt, the end of the line of the 4 mile stretch of the Gwili Railway, one of the last few stretches of functioning steam railway in the UK. The 8 mile round trip takes you through four stations along the picturesque railway line which runs along the Afon Gwili through steeply wooded hillsides.

VIEWING: You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself.  Please ensure that you have a copy of these sales details with you: we recommend either printing the details or downloading them to your phone/tablet/laptop before you go. Please take care when viewing as the great outdoors can contain unexpected hazards and woodlands are no exception.  Make sure you take a copy of the sales particulars with you, as there may be no mobile signal at the woodland.

Directions

From Carmarthen take the A484 north for approximately 5 miles towards Cynwyl Elfed.

After passing Carmarthen Demolition yard (known locally as Barretts) with railway sleepers on the left, look out for the Rock and Fountain Inn (a white building) on the left and a small waney-edge timber clad shed just beyond, with a Woodlands for Sale sign on it, and the entrance gate is immediately between the two on the left.

Turn in carefully and enter the code into the gate lock and wait for the gate to open automatically. It will also close again automatically. (Please contact us before your visit for the code).

After a short distance you will come to a locked gate. Please park here, without blocking the gate, and continue on foot.

Follow the track straight ahead and up the hill (passing a gate on the left hand side of the track-ignore this) until the track bends to the left and you come to a third (unlocked) gate with a Woodland for Sale sign on it. (On your right here, you will see a yellow public footpath marker indicating where the public footpath heads west, along the north bank of the Afon Nant Cwm-tawel.)

Continue through the gate and follow the MIDDLE track straight ahead, not the track to the right.

Continue along this track, up the fairly steep hill and just before the entrance to Cwm Adar directly ahead of you, take the track to your left and follow it up the hill.

Before you get to the top of the hill you will see the pull in area for Ffawydd Fach on your right, marked by a ride stop with a wooden name board and Woodlands for Sale sign.
