Hamperley Wood is a mixed woodland: mostly conifers in the south-western end, mostly broadleaved in the north-eastern end. There is good access over a track that runs along the south-eastern side. The wood is fairly level along its length, but drops away as you approach the adjoining road. A short distance along the main access track there is a ride stop and a small clearing which could be used as a useful area to park a vehicle. There is also room to park at the end of the access track. Half way along the track there is a shared wooden gate that gives way to the broadleaf part of the woodland.
Areas of Hamperley Wood are covered in bluebells in the spring and also 'wood sorrel' which tastes lovely in a salad and is also a good indicator of an ancient woodland site, but it is not designated as such.
Trees: The trees that can be found here include ash, oak, beech, rowan, sweet chestnut, hazel, holly and hawthorn, particularly along the northern boundary. The conifer trees in the southern half of Hamperley Wood are fairly mature and well spaced making it very accessible.
Many of the broadleaf trees are at a good age to start coppicing but there are also many young trees that have been planted to further encourage and diversify the wood.
A lot of hazel has been planted along the northern boundary to create a hedge along the field, interspersed with hawthorn which creates a great habitat of local wildlife.
Boundaries: The north-western boundary is the road. The short southern boundary is marked by red paint on trees (note: the red paint is very faded, and a piece of orange tape (see photo 12) will help you locate it). The north-eastern boundary is fenced from adjoining farmland. Two thirds of the south-eastern boundary is the shared main access track; the remaining one third is marked by paint on trees, red on Hamperley Wood side (extremely faded), blue on the other side. A track runs along this boundary as well, but it is owned by the neighbouring wood, and there is no right of way along this track.
Wildlife: rabbits, foxes, deer, badgers, owls, pheasant, raven and hawks may all be seen and heard here.
Access: a good track, suitable for any vehicles, leads from a gateway off the road, along the south-eastern edge of the wood, and, at the end, into the wood itself.
Sporting rights: included
Mineral rights: included, except as reserved by statute
Fencing obligations: none known
Covenant: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.
Public access: none
National Landscape: the wood is in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape (or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as it used to be known)
Local area: From Hamperley Wood you can see St. Michael's and All Angels church which was built in 1845 using mainly stone from the local area, known as Cwm Head.
Craven Arms and Church Stretton are nearby with good shops and pubs.
Photographs: were taken in August 2025
VIEWING: You are welcome to visit this wood by yourself. Please ensure that you have a copy of these sales details with you: we recommend either printing the details or downloading them to your phone/tablet/laptop before you go. Please take care when viewing as the great outdoors can contain unexpected hazards and woodlands are no exception. Make sure you take a copy of the sales particulars with you, as there may be no mobile signal at the woodland.
