Spring Coppice is a primarily broadleaf woodland, with a large central area of mature trees, with areas of young coppice stands particularly towards the south and western boundary, and pine towards the northern boundary. The topography of the woodland is a mix of sloping areas and large flat areas.
At the entrance to Spring Coppice there is a ride stop barrier. Behind the ridestop there is plenty of space to safely park a vehicle and unload the provisions or equipment needed for the visit. Continuing from the ride stop there is an easily walkable route that meanders around a small hill towards the western boundary; near the western boundary the track continues to the brow of the hill where there is a large flat natural clearing that could be suitable to use as a ‘base’ for woodland activities such as green woodworking, processing firewood and for camping. The clearing is surrounded by sweet chestnut trees that provide a sheltered enclosure that feels very private and secluded.
Trees: mainly consist of oak, sycamore, sweet chestnut and the occasional birch, beech and ash tree. Towards the northern boundary there is a sloping area that predominantly consists of well spaced pine trees.
Wildlife: Some of the wildlife that can be seen and heard here include badger, pheasant, raven, owl, partridge, fox, and buzzard. Historically this woodland has never been known to attract deer, however recent evidence would suggest that deer have been taking shelter near the western boundary amongst the bracken and ferns. During the daytime you can often hear geese, ducks and swans flying overhead to the lake nearby that is connected to the River Worfe.
Boundaries: The north-western and south-western boundaries are the main access track. The eastern boundary is fenced from adjoining farmland. The short north-eastern boundary from adjoining private woodland is marked with red paint on trees (with the other side marked with blue paint).
Access: From the main entrance gate, before you get to Spring Coppice, there is a very good track that is a long avenue called 'The Chase'. In recent years the large conifer trees that formed an archway were removed and in their place broadleaf trees have been planted, including oak, silver birch, ash, hazel, and wild cherry. In years to come when the trees have matured there will be a very diverse and wildlife-rich avenue and archway once again, leading to the woodland.
At the end of the straight track, a right turn leads down the side of an open field. The track then continues with Spring Coppice on the right hand side to the bottom of the hill, before turning right and running along the north-western boundary of the wood.
Sporting rights: Included
Mineral rights: Included, except as excluded by statute.
Fencing obligations: No known obligations
Covenant: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.
Public footpaths: The main access track is a public bridleway, but there are no public footpaths or public access of any kind within the woodland.
Local area: The woodland is 11 miles south-east of Telford, 7 miles north-east of Bridgnorth, and 12 miles west of Wolverhampton. The wood is just north of the picturesque village of Badger. The bridleway nearby provides a fantastic walk, through woodland and across fields to Beckbury, where the Smokey Cow ‘pie and smokehouse’ will be found. The bridleway is part of an old track from Badger Hall.
The village of Badger is nearby where there is a dingle with some large pools that are open to the public, and a temple built in the 1700s.
Photographs: were taken in October 2025.
