Description: Trebanog Fach Wood is a mixed woodland, with broadleaf trees, primarily oak, including one thought to be over 300 years old, some areas of spruce, and more open areas of grassland and smaller areas of scrub and bramble. It is gently sloping throughout, with many flatter areas. There are also remains of old stone walls, what could be ancient roadways, and there may even be a roman road through the wood. These combine to make the wood a wonderfully diverse place to explore.
There are wonderful views to the south across Penderyn reservoir, and Cwm Cynon to the mountains the opposite side of the valley, to the west into Cwm Nedd (Neath Valley), and towards Moel Penderyn to the north.
About a third of the wood is designated as Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (see wood map).
There is a stable in the central area, making the woodland idea for horses or ponies, but this could easily be repurposed if not required for stabling. The spruce has been thinned, and there is also potential timber income available from harvesting at some point in the future.
At this time of year the ground is dry throughout, but some areas can be quite wet in the winter.
Boundaries: The minor road is the western boundary of the woodland. All other boundaries are fenced from adjoining farmland.
Fencing: The current owner has kept ponies in the wood, and so has maintained the fences, but there is no known legal obligation to continue to do so.
Power lines: run across the wood, but these are a relatively low voltage (11kv) part of the network.
Wildlife: The wood is alive with the sounds of birds, including Wren, Redstart, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Great Tit, Willow Warbler, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Song Thrush, Blackbird and Robin
Access: A good stoned track, suitable for any vehicle, leads straight from the road all the way through the centre of the wood
Sporting rights: Included.
Mineral rights: Included, except as excluded by statute.
Public footpaths: There are no public footpaths within the land.
National Park: The wood is on the southern edge of Bannau Brycheiniog.
Local area: There is some history of coal mining in the area, and there was a small pit to the north of the wood, but almost all outside the boundaries of the wood. There is a small brick arch in the north-east corner of the wood which is believed to be the entrance to an old shaft.
Although the wood is close to the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, it is far enough away (three quarters of a mile) to be very quiet and secluded, and very little traffic uses the road alongside the wood.
It is conveniently located 4 miles from Hiwaun and 7 miles from Aberdare. Penderyn Distillery is less than two miles away.
