Description: Yr Hen Dderwen is a sheltered wood in the valley of the Afon Morgenau, a tributary of the River Teifi. The source of the Afon Morgenau is a short distance from the wood, and the river runs along the eastern boundary of the wood. The wood is mainly coniferous, primarily spruce with mixed broadleaves, particularly along the boundaries and along the river, but with a prolific understorey of young broadleaves, including ash, holly, oak, sycamore, hazel and laurel. Ground cover is moss, ground ivy, bracken and ferns, with bluebells, yellow pimpernel, red campion, and also wild garlic near the river in the spring
A number of small seasonal streams cross the woodland and feed into the river.
The western side of the wood, to the left of the track, slopes up reasonably steeply, but the eastern side to the right of the track is relatively level or gently sloping. The western side is mostly ancient woodland (Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site).
Access: The access to this woodland is via a gate at the entrance to Rhosygilwen Woods. A long track provides vehicular access through the length of Rhosygilwen woods, terminating in a turning circle within the wood itself. This access is currently only suitable for a four-wheel drive vehicle or ATV.
Public access: The track that runs through the middle of Yr Hen Dderwen is a public footpath, but probably little used. There is no other public access to the wood.
Sporting rights: Understood to be included.
Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.
Boundaries: The western and northern boundaries are fenced from adjoining woodland and farmland. The eastern boundary is the Afon Morgenau river. The southern boundary is not fully marked on the ground, but the point where the boundary crosses the track is indicated by two short stakes with blue paint, either side of the track (see photo 16). Between the track and the river, the eastern boundary is an earthbank. Between the track and the fenced to the west, the boundary is thought to follow an earthbank.
Local area and history: Yr Hen Dderwen is less than 2 miles from Cilgerran Castle, 5 miles from Cardigan, and 7 miles from Poppit Sands Beach.
Photographs: were taken in May 2026.
