Description: This is a graceful and extremely pleasing woodland situated at the north side of Gayhurst Wood. Planted in 1975, oak with birch it is a maturing young woodland with superb potential and great beauty. Long grass and some very pretty native natural regeneration add to its interest both aesthetically and for wildlife diversity. Amongst the young oaks and birch are hazel, hawthorn, goat willow, wild rose, elm and ash saplings. Its classified as a PAWS (plantation on ancient woodland site) wood, see the last map reproduced from magic.
Wildlife seen include muntjack, fallow and sika deer; nuthatch, goldfinch, wryneck, greater and lesser spotted woodpecker, buzzard, wren, robin; small mammals including the stoat and the list goes on!
Along the southern boundary are fine mature oak and occasional semi-mature Norway spruce and beech, looking carefully you will also spot the odd deciduous larch. This is a wonderful woodland to be enjoyed all year round, light, airy, visually pleasing and with a great selection of trees. Experiencing this woodland grow up and mature will be a joy.
This wood was formerly part of the Gayhurst Estate and as such the site has been well-managed during its lifetime. This is demonstrated by the quality of the grass rides and hedges.
Access: is by the right of way along the tracks shown green from the gate on Hanslope Road with maintenance according to use. The track along the north side is included but there is a right of way for the woodland to the north (North Bunsty Wood).
Boundaries: are indicated with blue markings. They are: along the south side - the edge of the track; along the east side - a line of blue markings on trees; along the north side - the south side of the track.
