Coed Caecrwyn

Situated in a beautiful wooded valley of the upper parts of the River Severn the wood is part of Coed Caercrwyn and although small is packed with oak, ash, birch, mountain ash, with occasional beech. Below in the under story are hazel with young ash and mountain ash while bilberry, wood sorrel and ferns are found on the woodland floor.   The oak has in the distant past been coppiced  possibly to supply oak bark to the old tanning works in Llandiloes.  It's deservedly classed as semi-natural ancient woodland, likely to have been wooded since at least 1600.

At the top, the woodland is reasonably flat, the middle parts are steeper while near the road more gentle. Although there is no vehicle access there is space to park opposite, under the oak tree.

 Boundaries:

• west undefined but the plan shows it to start opposite the hedge running down to the river then straight up to the top of the wood
• the roadside on the north side 
• east a low bank topped by an old fence
• south the fence by the old track at the top of the hill

Directions

•  Approaching Llandiloes on the bypass turn into the town centre
• The Market Hall occupies the middle of the main street, treat this as a roundabout
• Go right if travelling from the north or left if travelling from the south
• Cross the river,  turn left
• Take left fork, continue down the hill
• Go over the bridge turn immediately left
• Then immediately right
• Continue past the conifer plantation on the right
• The woodland for sale sign will be seen on the left
• Park under the large oak tree on the right hand side. Do not block the gate.
