Poulter Park Wood presents a unique chance to acquire a richly varied woodland set along the banks of the River Wandle in London.

The site supports a broad mix of tree species. Owing to its riverside setting, goat willow is particularly prevalent, while mature oak, bird cherry, hazel, hawthorn, yew, chestnut, birch, elder, sycamore and beech are also found throughout the woodland.

The River Wandle, a tributary of the River Thames, was once fed by natural springs and became well known for its abundant fish stocks. Following heavy industrialisation during the 18th and 19th centuries, it became one of the most polluted rivers in England. However, sustained restoration efforts have significantly improved water quality, allowing brown trout to return, alongside thriving populations of chub, roach and dace. Today, popular angling stretches can be found around Hackbridge and Colliers Wood. A man-made dyke branches directly from the Wandle into the centre of the site, enhancing the site’s biodiversity while adding to its character.

Poulter Park Wood offers strong potential as a community-focused project for local residents and families. Although the woodland has remained largely unmanaged for many years and would benefit from careful stewardship, it could be transformed into a rewarding natural retreat for those interested in conservation, woodland management, or simply enjoying time outdoors.

Locally, Mitcham Junction Station is within walking distance.

Ward is St Helier East and the Council is Sutton Borough.

Boundaries: The boundary is open on all sides and borders neighbouring parkland and woodland, W, S and E. N follow the bridleway along the River Wandle.
