Description: Cae Twr Isaf is a restored ancient woodland, although there is still a significant number of larch trees remaining.  There are beautiful views over the Menai Straights and towards Anglesey. The wood is accessed directly off the A487. It slopes up from the road, but it is quite easy to walk up to the top part where it levels off.   This area offers a lovely location to camp amongst the mature Oak as it is partly open ground and lets the sunshine through the trees, which makes it a pleasant spot to rest.  There is an old badger set which looks to be unoccupied at the moment, and evidence of an old track going through the woods where they would bring limestone up to the adjacent fields, although very little of this remains now.  There is a public footpath running alongside the track next to the wood, but this does not go through Cae Twr Isaf.   Areas of the wood are carpeted in Bluebells and Snowdrops in the Spring, and Foxgloves, Red Campion and Celandine also grow there.

There is a concrete reservoir next to the track, just outside the woodland boundary, fed by a spring and well within the woodland, which is used to feed properties the other side of the bypass.

Access: There is very good access off the A487 with parking in a layby outside the gate; inside the gate is a track which could be used after some clearing. The track is outside Cae Twr Isaf but the woodland owner has right of way over it, and it hasn’t been used for access to the adjacent fields for many years, even decades.

Boundaries: the boundaries of the wood are all fenced. It is understood the woodland owner is responsible for maintaining some, but not all, of the fences.

Local area: Caernarfon is only a short distance away, and the Plas Menai National Watersports Centre is a few hundred yards away, the other side of the A487.

Our Maps

Cae Twr Isaf is located alongside the A487 between Caernarfon and Bangor. There is an entrance in front of a wooden gate, where you can safely park. The gate mainly serves the woodland, so there should be no problem parking in front of the gate.

From the south/Caernarfon: Take the A487 towards Bangor. At the Griffiths Crossing roundabout take the third exit to stay on the A487 towards Caergybi/Holyhead. The woodland is one quarter of a mile further along, on the right side of the road. There are double white lines at this point, so you should continue to the next roundabout (just under 3 miles) and then double back.

From the North and East/the A55 Expressway: Take the exit signposted A487 Bangor/A4087 Caernarfon, and take the first exit A4087 Caernarfon. At the next roundabout, take the first exit for A487 Caernarfon. After 2.8 miles the wood is on the left side of the road.

  • Postcode for Satnav:      LL55 1UE
  • Coordinates for Satnav: 53.17028,-4.23159 (layby and entrance gate)

If navigating with a satnav using the postcode, note this is for Plas Menai, located on a side road off the A487, whereas the wood is on the A487 itself. If coming from Caernarfon, do not take the turning off the Griffiths Crossing roundabout, 0.3 miles from your destination. Instead, continue along the A487. The woodland is one quarter of a mile further along, on the right side of the road. There are double white lines at this point, so you should continue to the next roundabout (just under 3 miles) and then double back. If coming from the north and east, you will reach the woodland about 0.7 miles before your postcode destination.
