Description   Alaud Wood lies in the southern edge of an area known as Breckland, a man-made area of open heathland formed by many years of sheep grazing allowing heather to become dominant. The climate is dry and the sandy soils overlaying chalk tend to dryness. After the first world war much of the area was planted with conifers, mostly Corsican and Scots pine to make up for the wartime losses of  home grown timber and to secure a future with timber.

Pine is evenly spread throughout Alaud Wood, about 40 years of age, straight grown and even 'ringed'.

At the centre the open area with benches and logs is an ideal location from which to enjoy all the pleasures and enjoyment woodland ownership can bring.

With about 47,000 acres of forest nearby help in the form of chainsaw persons is always available, help to take out the odd tree to open up the woodland floor and encourage natural regeneration of broadleaved trees or creating light for tree planting. This stage of the wood's development is ideal for continous cover forestry, the small woodland owner is well-placed to be able to foster the succession natural woodland exhibits.

Nearby, an indication of local populations from early history can be seen from the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, more recent history is linked with Culford Hall and Park, at one time Alaud Wood was integral with the park and has a Historic Park designation.

Boundaries: Are shown by mauve markings on trees and posts and are, northwest - the wood edge 2 metres from the centre of the track, northeast the line of mauve and orange marked posts and southwest the woodland edge 2m from the track centre.
