Description:  North Hill Wood is a peaceful haven yet conveniently located within 5 minutes of the A30 and with good access. It's located in the  Blackdown Hills AONB  (area of outstanding natural beauty) aptly described as the Westcountry's hidden gem.  The access track runs along the top of the valleyside; the woodland drops down the south east facing side makng the woodland bright, light and warm. Once within the woodland you soon realise that this is a special place that time has passed by, a more tranquil wood would be hard to find. There are two distinct areas, the first being a mix of spruce and firs set on the gently sloping hill. The second, an area of level ground where there are some fine established beech and sweet chestnut. A perfect place to camp or picnic.

In addition some recent works undertaken by the current owner include:

  • 150 fast growing hybrid willows planted Feb 2010, these will provide a good continuous annual source of firewood in 3 to 4 years from now, as they can be rotationally coppiced;
  • 75 mixed broad leaves planted Feb 2009, oak, sweet chestnut, wild cherry, field maple etc.
  • Hard standing area for 3-4 vehicles at the entrance to the wood.
  • Good main track all the way through the wood, with turning point at northern end, and access rides down into the wood.
  • Turning circle with hardcore created halfway along the main ride in the wood, large enough for a car with caravan.
  • Flat area with hardcore created on this turning circle to put a caravan.

Being quiet and undisturbed the local wildlife flourish here with roe deer have been seen on every visit so far, as well as greater spotted woodpeckers. If you are looking for a peaceful spot with potential for long-term woodland/habitat management, then this is a perfect wood.
