Big trees holding tons of timber, recently thinned make for a drammatic woodland.  Brash from the thinning has been racked into conservation-friendly habitat piles leaving the woodland floor easy to traverse. The site is level and the ground sandy and free-draining, at any time of year the woodland can be enjoyed, young trees planted, older ones harvested, naturally occuring seedlings encouraged for the next generation of timber supply.

Norway spruce give way to Scots pine and mixed with these are tall slender oak, chestnut and sycamore forming the broadleaved component.  Halo thinning  will give them much needed space to expand in the canopy.

All of our land is steeped in history but here that past use is more than obvious. The Bronze Age bowl barrow as shown on the plan is prime evidence of local ancient settlements, full description can be seen by clicking here. 'Finds' here include flint flakes and Bronze Age and Roman pottery. A fuller historical account of this area can be found by clicking here and shows a timeline from post ice-age to present day.

With about 47,000 acres of forest nearby, help in the form of chainsaw persons is always available, help to take out the odd tree to open up the woodland floor and encourage natural regeneration of broadleaved trees or creating light for tree planting. This stage of the wood's development is ideal for continuous cover forestry.

Just the other side of the woodland is Culford Parkland Bowl Barrow Wood occupies part of the old estate and hence is included in the Park and Garden Heritage designation.

This wood is worthy of consideration for Inheritance Tax mitigation, a chat with an accountant could confirm or otherwise this.

Note: the lidded pipe with padlock was put in to test the ground water level. Water is about 2 metres down. The pipe could be used as a modest water supply for watering etc, using a 12 volt immersion pump. It is clean but not drinkable.

Boundaries  Are indicated by turquoise markings on trees alongside the woodside tracks except for the line of posts from the gateway. The roadside is the remaining boundary.

Sporting Rights  Are in hand and included.

Access  Is off the public highway from the main entrance with the double gates and along the forest tracks shown dashed green on the plans. A full right of way with the shared maintenance according to the use made.

Covenant  The purchasers of this woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands. Click here for details.
