Description    Granden Wood owes much of its character to being located between a river valley and Breckland; the light sandy soils of the latter allow for free drainage while the river water underground is good for the trees.

Scots pine predominates, a tree easy to recognise with its beautiful rust-red bark, tall straight habit and needles arranged in pairs. Adding variety Corsican pines are also in abundance these having grey bark and longer needles. Distributed amongst the conifers are fully-leaved lime trees, elm and some oak wth chestnut.

With about 47,000 acres of forest nearby, help in the form of chainsaw persons is always available if required. Taking out the odd tree to open up the woodland floor will encourage natural regeneration of broadleaves or creating light for tree planting. This stage of the wood's development is ideal for continous cover forestry, the small wood owner is well-placed to be able to foster the ecological succession that natural woodland exhibits.  Nearby, an indication of local populations from early history can be seen from the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, there are many features from this era locally being well-populated in those times.  More recent history is linked with Culford Hall and Park, at one time Granden Wood was integral with the park and has a Historic Park designation.

Access is over grassed tracks either from the main double gates or from the entrance just 100m to the south.

Boundaries  Are shown by blue markings on trees and posts and are, north: the line of posts, west and south the trackside, east posts with wire.

Mineral Rights  Are retained by a previous owner but these cannot be exercised without the owner of Granden Wood's agreement.

Sporting Rights  Are in hand and included.

Access  Is off the public highway from the main entrance with the double gates and along the forest tracks shown dashed green on the plans. A full right of way with the shared maintenance according to the use made.

Granden Wood lies about 5 miles north of Bury St Edmunds, 12 miles south of Thetford and little over 30 mins from Cambridge within easy reach of the A12, A14 and M11.

  • From the A14 at Bury St Edmunds head for the Fornhams
  • at Fornham St Genevieve take the B1106 towards Culford and Thetford
  • fork left signed West Stow, the wood entrance is about ½ mile on the right through the double wooden gates
  • park to one side

.... walk round the double gates follow the track, then take the left track - walk down this until seeing the blue markings on the right with the entrance and name rail.
