Scots pine, a long-lived native conifer of fine form, is the main feature of this woodland. A light and airy wood with grasses covering the woodland floor, it is easily walked through.

The light sandy soil is ideal for year-round use yet 2 metres down the ground water is ever present to stop any summer drought slowing the trees' growth. With about 47,000 acres of forest nearby, help in the form of chainsaw persons is always available, help to take out the odd tree to open up the woodland floor and encourage natural regeneration of broadleaved trees or creating light for tree planting. This stage of the wood's development is ideal for continuous cover forestry

A desirable woodland ideal for family enjoyment, fire wood collection and camping.

Oak with sweet chestnut and sycamore spread throughout thrive here and are at an intermediate stage in their life cycle. Halo thinning  will give them much needed space to expand in the canopy.

At any time of year the woodland can be enjoyed, young trees planted, older ones harvested, naturally occuring seedlings encouraged for the next generation of timber supply. 

Nearby, an indication of local populations from early history can be seen from the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, more recent history is linked with Culford Parkland, Salus Wood occupies part of the old estate and hence is included in the Park and Garden Heritage designation. There is also a Conservation Area designation.
