Description    A very attractive, well managed woodland with road frontage, good access, set on free draining level ground.

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) one of our three native conifers, forms the backbone of this woodland. A good timber tree with a rust-red bark and being slow growing the timber is strong and easily worked. Planted almost 50 years ago, these Scots pines have grown straight and even, are now well-thinned and will increase steadily in diameter.

Side-by-side are the faster growing Corsican pine (Pinus nigra maritima aka laricio) introduced into this country in the mid 18th Century from southern Italy as a timber tree and can be distinguished by their longer needles and grey bark.

Broadleaved trees including oak and sweet chestnut  thrive here as can be seen from their growth. Looking for tree seedlings would be well-rewarded but any found would need a tree shelter to protect them from the inquisitive deer frequenting the woodlands. Silver birch are easily established and grow well here.

The sandy soil is ideal for year-round access and is perfect for getting new trees established.

Nearby, an indication of local populations from early history can be seen from the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, more recent history is linked with Culford Hall and Park, at one time Wallis Wood was integral with the park and now has a Historic Park designation. To the north extends the Brecklands where after the Great War planting started to form the Forestry Commission's now extensive Thetford Forest.

Boundaries: Are shown by orange markings on trees and posts and are, north -  the line of posts, east - 3 metres from the track centre, south - 3 metres from the track centre, the west it's the boundary with the roadside.

Sporting Rights: Are in hand and included.

Access: Is off the public highway along the grassy forest track with a full right of way, the shared maintenance is according to the use made.

Covenant  The purchasers of this woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands. Click here for details.
