Folly Wood and the surrounding woods are classified as ancient and semi-natural woodland and are rich in wildlife, the beautiful Cotswold landscape is recognised by the AONB designation, Click here  for their website and description.  The whole of the woodland has a TPO designation and this area is also a County Wildlife Site, Click here for CWS info. The tree preservation order and CWS do not affect normal forestry management where a Forestry Commission approved management plan is in place. In winter there are views stretching as far as the Severn Estuary.

In the wood you will find mostly beech but also silver birch, sycamore, hornbeam, occasional yew and whitebeam with hazel, guelder rose (not a rose but a viburnum) wayfaring tree (another viburnam) and lots of ferns and mosses. The quarry contains two English elm trees unaffected by the fungus, quite a rarety now.

The topography:  although generally sloping, there are good level areas for all the woodland activities one might practice, being mostly level nearer the road and to the north east, then it slopes down to the north west track.

The geology is simple, the wood is set on Gloucester Limestone, the honey coloured stone seen fronting many of the building locally. Click here for a better description The soil is thin but it does mean stone is readily available for repairing tracks or creating turning circles. Or take some home for a rockery. The old quarry is shallow and easily accessed.  As the wood has a TPO and is a Local Wildlife Site any works are best done as part of a Forestry Commission approved management plan.

Rights of Way  There are a rights of way as shown green on the plan for the woodland owners.  The path at the far north east is a public footpath as are the tracks around the wood.  The definitive maps can be seen here.

Access  The woodland can be accessed by car off Whiteway through the two sets of gates. There is a full right of way along a hard track to the wood with hard standing in locations within the wood for parking.

Boundaries  Please refer to the wood plan and are:  south, the roadside;  west, stakes at the top and at the lower end;  northwest and northeast the edge of the track;  east, marked boundary trees;  southeast the trackside.
