Ellis Wood is a classic Sussex quality mature oak woodland,  level and with good access.

There is a double row of woodland banks topped with hornbeam coppice along the road frontage which has the effect of screening Ellis Wood from the road making it more private. Behind these banks there is an access track from the road down to the further parts of the woodland. Along the side of the track there is a strip woodland containing oak with birch and sweet chestnut coppice, some of the latter is very large and could be grown on to standard form. At the end of the track there is an open area with occasional mature trees and coppice and beyond this mature woodland of oak and birch with an understorey of coppice including some hazel. There are damper areas which are dominated by alder and willow.

In spring there is the most dazzling display of bluebells, seen in the photos taken this year. With the bluebells are areas of wood anenome and celandine and to the south a carpet of ransoms (wild garlic).

A small seasonal stream borders the southern boundary.

Records show the wood to be Ancient semi-natural. See the website magic.gov.uk and select Woodchurch and Habitat Inventories to see the online map. This plan is also shown in the photos gallery. Because of the special wildlife quality it is designated with another 240 acres to the north as a Kent Wildlife Site (click here for details)(here for map). The landscape value is acknowledged in the Special Landscape Area designation. Sporting rights and mineral rights are included.

Boundaries: to the north it's the roadside, to the west and south sides it's the ditch/bank with the open fields and to the east there is a line of fencing stakes.
