A fast flowing stream runs along the western edge, adding to this flow small drains gently take water from the wood, perfect for children to puddle around in, build dams and bridges and generally experiment with water.

Firewood is plentiful and on the ground there are rush, sedge, iris, grasses, dogs mercury and the more robust wood spurge. Wetter areas alternate with the dryer higher ground, at the centre, and accessed from the ridestop, is an open area perfect as a focus of woodland activities.

Oak, with ash and hazel, is frequent in the drier areas, silver birch is widespread while well-grown alder thrives in the moist soils.  The big poplar trees would be a good source of firewood, although poplar firewood must be kept dry once seasoned. At the north-east corner is an old pond, formed about 40 years ago, this is silted up but cleaning would be beneficial to maximise the pond's potential - removing some of the marginal trees to allow more light in and taking out some of the accumulated sediment.

Nearby, England's largest private house, the Palace of the Marquess of Winchester, is now a ruin of Old Basing. Unfortunately the Marquess was on the wrong ‘side’ in the Civil War and Oliver Cromwell and his followers converted this large abode into the ruin it is today.

Boundaries   Are shown by turquoise markings on free standing posts and on boundary trees. They are: along the north and northeast side a row of free standing posts; to the south alongside the track edge and to the west the far side of the stream.

Covenant  The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodlands, click HERE to read and download.
